Our people: Main Street community inspires local artist
Tyra Mae Marshall is a local artist working at the Just Kiln Me Now studio located at 405 Main Street in Clovis. She has lived at Cannon Air Force Base for six years while her husband is stationed here.
Marshall, from San Diego, met her husband in high school, but the couple didn’t start dating until after a few years in college. During his studies, Marshall studied media arts and animation at various schools near his hometown.
Marshall hopes to pursue her career goals in stop-motion animation or pottery in the future, as she and her husband soon end their time here in Clovis.
Q: Do you have a favorite artist?
A: No one in particular. I gather a lot of knowledge about style and technique from a long list of artists. If the artists have amazing skills in animation, character design, or any other spooky theme, I’m probably a fan of their work.
Q: What’s the best thing about your job?
A: I can do what I am most passionate about and help others who want to try it too. I love when I can share my creative contributions. I don’t have a specific art form that I favor so I appreciate that the studio (Just Kiln Me Now) is open to doing anything.
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: Does a comic count? One of my favorites (if not the most favorite) are the Sandman comics, written by Neil Gaiman. When it comes to writers, this is my favorite.
Q: What is your favorite season and why?
A: Hands down, fall. It’s ghost season, but it’s also the season for baked goods, soups and sweaters. All things comfortable. It’s when I like to hike, camp and just be outside smelling the fresh air.
Q: If you could go anywhere in the world for a day, where would you go and why?
A: Anywhere with beautiful forests, local myths, stories, and scenic views. I feel more at peace in places like this. Something like the feeling of zen and excitement at the same time. I really like the outdoors, I guess.
Q: What is the greatest gift you have ever received?
A: When I adopted my puppy. He is like my shadow, my adventure companion, my therapy. He has helped me so much with my anxiety disorder that I cannot thank him enough. It is also therapeutic for my partner.
Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Oh, I was a big collector of comics, movie posters, and action figures. I let most of them go, but the habit of collecting is still present in my life. I collect random things on walks like cute pine cones and rocks. I love to collect artwork from my friends and local artists, homemade Christmas decorations and everything Halloween related.
Q: If your friends and family had to describe you in one word, which word would they choose?
A: It’s always difficult to answer questions like these because I don’t like to speak for others. The specific words I hear a lot are “weird” and “creative”. I would say most of my family call me weird and most of my friends call me creative. I guess it’s a matter of perspective.
Q: If you could time travel to any year, which year would it be and why?
A: 2011 because that’s when I felt the most adventurous, alive and independent. (This is) when I felt like making real connections with people.
Q: What do you like best about Clovis?
A: I would say the Main Street community. This is where I see everyone supporting each other and where I see the most creativity and where I meet the most interesting people.
