Blue Whole Presents Veteran Artist
SEQUIM – The featured artist this month at the Blue Whole Gallery is Mary Franchini, a veteran artist known also as a teacher and curator.
“Some Old and Some New” will be on display at the gallery at 129 W. Washington St., Sequim throughout the month. The opening hours of the gallery are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. It complies with departmental public health directives.
Visitors can meet the artist during the First Friday Art Walk from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Friday.
âFrom landscape to portrait, Mary approaches the subject with a fresh perspective, producing paintings with a lasting impression, often with symbolic elements,â the organizers said.
Franchini said that at the start of a new year she was commissioned to fill two windows of the Blue Whole Gallery.
âSo I looked around my studio and thought I had a lot of rooms to fill four windows. ”
She said the collection âis a look back and forward, some time back.
“Some have been repainted, and some just cropped but are all mine.”
Franchini used a variety of mediums, combining several of them.
âMy main medium is now probably acrylic, but more are added every now and then,â she said.
She said she had had many great teachers, mostly in workshops.
âOne thing I loved about Robert Burridge was that he gave us a piece of yellow paper with a big black PERMISSION printed on it. I took this permission to heart and felt free to paint what I wanted and how I wanted, at any time.
